Dani Larkin - rising folk star for the Róisín Dubh

Armagh singer-songwriter brings feminist perspective and an appreciation of Irish mythology to her songwriting

DANI LARKIN, one of the most exciting new talents in Irish folk, will play the Róisín Dubh next week, accompanied by her full band.

The Armagh folk singer-songwriter and guitarist will play the Dominick Street venue on Thursday November 25 at 8pm. She undertakes her Irish tour on something of the crest of a wave, with her debut album, Notes For A Maiden Warrior, being among the most acclaimed Irish releases of the year.

Larkin brings a feminist perspective, and an appreciation of Irish mythology and heritage to her songwriting, showing how old forms have a way of speaking clearly to contemporary concerns. She describes herself as writing “subverted fairy tales” where “the protagonist becomes the voice, not the victim”.

“These fairytales draw on concepts such as fascism, folklore, reproductive rights, motherhood, and wildness,” says Dani. “It notes how the root of fascism is shame; how folklore and story are interlinked throughout the world, especially Jewish and Irish folklore, and how art, music and story are key in dismantling various systems of oppression.”

On guitar, she displays a Preston Reed like dexterity and high technical ability, while her melodic sense shows her songs have the potential to be widely accessible. She has deservedly reaped critical acclaim, with The Irish Times declaring her a “rising star on the Irish contemporary and alt folk scene”; The Thin Air praised her “remarkable knack for eking out sublime, burrowing melodies, evocative of Irish traditional music”; while Goldenplc hailed her “mesmerising chord structures and strong vocal performances”.

Dani has supported Rufus Wainwright, Lisa O'Neill, and Joshua Burnside, and performed at Other Voices. Her songs have been played on RTÉ Radio 1 and various BBC Radio Ulster shows.
