Meeting adjourned after councillor accuses others of "giving false hope"

Councillors Alan Cheevers and Owen Hanley clash over Housing For All policy

Monday's meeting of the Galway City Council was adjourned for 10 minutes after Cllr Alan Cheevers accused "Left leaning parties" of "giving false hope" to people in the city.

With the Housing for All plan being discussed Cllr Cheevers responded to Cllr Owen Hanley, who voiced his concerns with some parts of the plan.

"There is very real trauma with the stress people are under," Cllr Hanley said about the current housing crisis. "All of us want Housing for All to work. There are good things in this plan, but there are also policy directions I would be critical of such as the reduction of targets for social housing."

Cllr Hanley [pictured above] subsequently spoke about money being given to developers in grants and subsidies, while also talking about the lack of security for renters.

Cllr Cheevers responded: "This is the most comprehensive Housing for All policy delivered in the history of the State. This has been well thought out and well costed. It isn't going to happen overnight.

"We have left leaning parties at the moment saying that they will be handing out keys in Eyre Square. It gives false hope to the people of the city what they are saying."

Mayor Colette Connolly adjourned the meeting for a brief period before the debate on Housing For All recommenced.
