Salthill and Athenry continue to impress

An exciting season is unfolding

The Galway FA premier division season remains highly competitive with Salthill Devon and Athenry both chalking up important wins at the weekend.

Victor Collins’ Devon outfit had to show plenty of resilience against a spirited Corrib Rangers, eventually prevailing 3-1 victors.

Rangers commenced the match brightly leading at the interval courtesy of a goal from the impressive Mark Wynne.

After the restart, though, unbeaten Salthill responded as Rory Brennan, Vinny Faherty, and Timmy Molloy registered goals.

Seamie Crowe’s Athenry gleaned a sixth triumph on the trot when beating Tuam Celtic 2-0 at Moonbaun with Adam Duffy and Cole Connolly the goalscorers.

A rapidly improving Galway Hibernians, under the direction of Stephen Walsh, overcame Colemanstown United 4-2 at Bohermore.

The in-form Shane Hulgraine supplied a hat-trick, while Shane Walsh also scored for Hibs, Geordan Kenny and Gary Lally replied for Colemanstown.

Another team moving in the right direction, Maree-Oranmore, enjoyed a hugely encouraging 2-0 success over West United at O’Connor Park.

Brendan Tully and Malachy Black netted for Maree-Oranmore, who have won three matches in a row.

Corrib Celtic proved too strong for St Bernard’s in Abbeyknockmoy earning a 4-1 victory as Shane Concannon, Ciaran Nugent, Kevin Fox, and Ryan Sheridan grabbing goals with Colin Treacy scoring for the home side.

Friday’s clash between Tuam Celtic and Colemanstown is a vital fixture for both clubs, while Sunday’s games carry real significance too.

In Annaghdown Corrib Celtic host Loughrea, while the meeting of William Grant’s West United and Jimmy Jennings’ Corrib Rangers is worth monitoring.

The FAI Junior Cup features some attractive ties with Drom providing the backdrop for Salthill Devon and Maree-Oranmore tomorrow.

On Saturday Mervue United will be hoping to avenge a recent league defeat against Hibs at Fahy’s Field. Then on Sunday Mervue B face Athenry at the same venue.
