Galway-based biotechnology company, Glasport Bio, took home the coveted Excellence in Energy Research and Innovation award and a €10,000 bursary at recent The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI ) Energy Awards.
GlasPort Bio has developed a solution to allow greater use and reuse from perceived waste agricultural materials. Their GasAbate product is added to stored slurry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase biogas production following Anaerobic Digestion. The product has the potential to reduce national emissions and enhance the renewable energy output of slurry.
Commenting on the award Dr Ruairi Friel, Chief Executive Officer, GlasPort Bio said they are delighted to have won this award.
“It is a great validation of our company and it is a great reward for our hard working and passionate team. Winning this award will spur us on as we launch commercial beta testing of our product later this year.”
There were 26 finalists shortlisted for the 2021 SEAI Energy Awards with projects delivering combined energy savings of €41.5 million. A total of ten awards were presented to individuals, businesses, communities, and public sector organisations in recognition of their commitment and dedication to sustainable energy and climate action.
Commenting on the leadership shown by all the finalists and winners, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD, congratulated the participants in this year’s SEAI Energy Awards who he said are “setting an example for us all, with real life solutions for a cleaner more sustainable energy future.
“Right across the country we are seeing a growing commitment to sustainability, from individuals, communities, businesses and public bodies. The Climate Action plan, which will be published shortly, will set out how we can scale up our efforts across all sectors, so that we can face the climate challenge together,” he added.
