Salthill to Swim in Pink this Halloween with June Curtin of Snámhaí Sásta

Mental health advocate and sea swimmer June Curtin of Snámhaí Sásta will join Galway fire and rescue service at Salthill’s first Swim in Pink event in aid of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute. June will travel from her native Spanish Point in Co Clare to lead anyone willing to swim, dip or splash in pink into the water at Ladies Beach, Salthill, on Sunday, October 31st at 1pm.

The inaugural Swim in Pink is the brainchild of Blackrock Beachwear’s, Louise Griffin, who has also created a limited-edition swimsuit especially for the event, with all profits going to the NBCRI. The swimsuit has been designed with the pink ribbon - the international symbol of breast cancer awareness - and the Swim in Pink logo.

For the founder of this Galway-based swimming and outdoor wear brand, it is a cause close to her heart. Her mother, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother were all diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I would love if we can turn the tide on breast cancer,” explains Louise, “and what better way than to swim in pink on October 31st.

“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer. I am so grateful that my mother had a brilliant outcome and is doing so well 14 years on from her treatment. I wanted to support the work of the NBCRI and, as an avid sea swimmer myself, what better way than to dive in for breast cancer research.

“I’m so excited that we will be joined by June Curtin, who is a bit of a celebrity in the sea swimming world, and that we can bring the full Snámhaí Sásta experience to Salthill. I’m delighted to have the support of the Galway fire and rescue service who will provide a great welcome to June, and all involved in the event.

“June has built an incredible community of sea swimmers from around the country through Snámhaí Sásta and will lead all participants into the water at 1pm on Ladies beach this Halloween.”

The Salthill event is part of a nationwide Swim in Pink campaign, where people from around the country are asked to don their brightest pink on Sunday, October 31st and swim, dip, or splash for the NBCRI.

Registration costs €20 at www.swiminpink.ie and participants will receive a free Swim in Pink swim hat.

Limited edition Swim in Pink swimsuits designed by Blackrock Beachwear cost €50 with all profits going to the NBCRI. These can be purchased online at www.swiminpink.ie
