Galway Motor Club’s Sylvie Mullins breaks record in championship win

Galway Motor Club's Sylvie Mullins has broken the track record in his first Formula Boss Ireland Championship victory.

The win came after a busy two weeks rebuilding his gearbox and fixing a major oil leak since the last race meeting.

However, when Mullins headed to Mondello Park needing just one point to claim his first Formula Boss Championship Crown, there were still doubts of victory having suffered with numerous gremlins throughout the year and with no testing done before this event.

Yet, in this last race meeting of the year, Mullins's qualifying times were quickly within reach of the Formula Boss record which stood at 50.66.

With everyone watching the times, Mullins not only broke the Boss record, but also the outright Mondello Park record with a 49.02, almost 1.2 seconds quicker than the previous record time set in 1997. However, it was a record that could not go into the record books because it was broken in a qualifying event.

In the first race Mullins got a great start, and within two laps he was on his qualifying pace again, but on the fifth lap the car slowed with a bad misfire. However, with three minutes left on the clock Mullins came around the top corner on full tilt with his 630bhp Judd engine sounding good again. With everyone waving in support, he threw down the hammer and set a time of 50.32, one hundredth off the overall record, but good enough to claim both the Formula Boss record and his first Formula Boss Ireland Championship.

Race two lacked the drama or action of race one as the weather ensured all cars were forced on full wet tyres for the whole race. Having made a good start and driving a clean consistent race Mullins finished off his year with a strong second place.

It was a hugely successful year for the Galway club member in his first full Boss championship as he and his team claimed the prestigious Leinster Trophy, Formula Boss Ireland Championship, and the Formula Boss Ireland Mondello Park national track record.
