It was an eventful few days for Aoibheann Costello, who made a significant impact in the WNL for Galway WFC.
On Saturday Costello bagged the only goal of the game as Stephen Lally’s improving team defeated title chasing Wexford Youths at Ferrycarrig Park.
The following day Costello scored twice for Phil Trill’s Galway WFC U19s, who defeated Cork City 5-0 at Dangan. Then on Monday Costello, the immensely promising teenager, turned 17 years of age.
Costello’s cousin, Kate Thompson, a Republic of Ireland U17 international, also provided a valuable contribution for Galway WFC.
In a tense U17 cup quarter-final Thompson’s goal was decisive ensuring Galway WFC advanced to the penultimate round.
The U19s triumph over City included goals from Costello (2 ), Aoibhinn Donnelly, and Abbie Callanan, who has scored eight times at that level in 2021.
This Sunday’s U19 Cup semi-final away to Shelbourne will be revealing, while the previous afternoon the U17s host Donegal in the league at Dangan.
Ethan Connolly and Charlie Concannon scored as Galway United U19s drew 2-2 away to Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds. Brendan O’Connor’s outfit are away to Cobh Ramblers next.
Martin Devlin’s U17s were too strong for Limerick FC at Rathbane. A hat-trick from David Tarmey means the attacker has now scored eight in five matches, while Mark O’Halloran (2 ), Liam Murray, and Steven Healy also notched goals. United are at home to Carlow Kilkenny on Saturday.
Anthony O’Neill’s U15s drew 2-2 away to Shamrock Rovers. Brian Cunningham, brother of first team player Padraic, and Jack Weesjes clipped goals for United.
Xavi Vazquez’s United U14s drew 1-1 with the Hoops at Eamonn Deacy Park and can now look forward to an elite phase quarter-final.
