Galway’s Galmere Foods has been awarded Gold Membership 2021 for Origin Green, the BordBia sustainability programme. Gold Membership is the highest form of membership a company can attain in any given year.
The team at Galmere is delighted to have its achievements and drive recognised with such a prestigious award. With only 50 Gold memberships awarded this year, each member has displayed excellence in achieving or exceeding their targets in sustainability.
Within its current sustainability plan (2020 – 2024 ), Galmere was credited for its strong performance across waste and energy related targets.
In the Energy target area, during 2020. they achieved a 3% reduction in electricity, a 16% reduction in gas, and a 50% reduction in diesel usage by embracing route optimisation.
By focusing on supplier certification via standards such as the Bord Bia Sustainable Horticulture Assurance Scheme (SHAS ) Galmere performed strongly across the Raw Material Sourcing target area and also across the Health and Nutrition target area, with the company having increased the number of “healthy product ranges”.
Galmere celebrates its whole team’s determination to work closely together in developing innovative solutions for climate change.

“We have increased raw materials sourced from Bord Bia-accredited Irish suppliers and our latest initiative, growing basil on site for our pestle and mortar pestos, will substantially reduce food air miles.”

Making fine food in Galway since 1989, Galmere employs 70 people. In other Awards news, Galmere is a finalist for seven products in the 2021 Blas na hEireann Awards; for six private label products and also for its muti award winning Pestle + Mortar red pesto. Roots and Shoots’ Green Lentil Dahl has been awarded a Star in the prestigious Great Taste Awards.
