John Prine to be celebrated at livestream concert in Galway

'Souvenirs' to take place at The Mick Lally Theatre on Monday October 4

JOHN PRINE, the late, great, American singer-songwriter, best known for such songs as ‘Same Stone’, ‘Illegal Smile’, and ‘Angel From Montgomery’, will be celebrated next month in his adopted home of Galway.

Prine, who died last year from complications due to Covid-19, was married to Irishwoman, Fiona Whelan Prine, and for more than 20 years, spent summers in Kinvara, south Galway, often participating in music sessions at Mary Green’s pub.

As a result, The Prine Family, The Mick Lally Theatre, RTÉ Radio One, and the South Wind Blows programme, will present ‘Souvenirs - celebrating the life and songs of John Prine with family and friends’ on Monday October 4 at 7.30pm.

The concert will feature Mary Black, Paul Brady, Pat Crowley, Mette Jensen, Ruth McGill, Tanya McCole, Chris Meehan, Paul Mulligan, Little John Nee, Declan O'Rourke, Brian Palm, Tommy Prine, Bill Shanley, Sharon Shannon, Mary Staunton, Mary Stokes, Ciaran Tourish, and Daniel Whelan.

They will perform songs from across Prine’s distinguished catalogue. The popular broadcaster, and a friend of John Prine, John Creedon will be the MC. It will be streamed from The Mick Lally Theatre, home of Druid.

“John recognized that in Ireland people loved and accepted him outside of his life as a celebrated artist,” Fiona Whelan Prine said. “His Irish passport was one of his most prized possessions. We are delighted to be able to remember him with his family and musician friends from Ireland, with this very special tribute event from Galway."

Tickets are €25 for the live stream. An on demand screening of the show will be available from October 7 to 10 with tickets at €20. Tickets are available via themicklallytheatre.ticketsolve.com and proceeds will go towards Doras, an independent, non-profit, NGO, working to promote and protect the rights of people from a migrant and refugee background in Ireland, and Druid Theatre Company. The concert will be broadcast on RTÉ Radio One at a future date. See also www.johnprine.com
