Galway WFC manager Stephen Lally was ‘disappointed’ his improving team suffered a WNL defeat against a hugely promising DLR Waves outfit at the UCD Bowl on Sunday afternoon.
Lally’s charges started the game brightly, but DLR Waves struck twice in quick succession to earn the spoils in the capital. Eight days previously Galway beat the Waves in the FAI Cup with Lally remaining optimistic about the remainder of the campaign.
“We were tremendous for the first 15 minutes, we had three good chances,” Lally says. “I felt if one of them had gone in that we would have been in a great position. I turned around to the coaching staff and said that we are so much on top that we need to score.
“Then from their first attack they scored. To make it worse we conceded another one a minute after that. To be two down as a team that had been dominating the game was disappointing. We actually had more chances than we did the previous week against them.
“We played some nice stuff, we played really well. We will learn from the goals we conceded. We were disappointed to lose because we wanted to keep the momentum going.”
With no fixture this weekend, Galway WFC are busy preparing for a September 25 Eamonn Deacy Park clash with Treaty United.
Captain Savannah McCarthy has received a senior international call up, while Therese Kinnevey, Kate Slevin, Shauna Brennan, and Nicole McNamara are involved with the Republic of Ireland U19s in a mini tournament in Portugal.
“We are losing players to international squads, but that is a good sign,” Lally says about the upcoming training schedule. “Sav is gone with the Irish senior team this week. We have four girls going with the Irish U19s - Therese, Kate, Shauna, and Nicole.
“Sav has been unbelievable, in fairness to her. She really has worked hard, they all have. That is down to what they are doing in training. They have stepped up a bit. With a new manager there can be a change of approach, everybody wanted to be doing the right thing. So we stepped up the training.”
