It has been announced this week that the new Galway to Limerick direct train service will be up and running by May 2009.
This is upon completion of the €106.5 million redevelopment of the Ennis-Athenry line, phase one of the wider Western Rail Corridor project under Transport 21.
Work on the rail service is well under way and significant work has already been undertaken. Almost 18 miles of track is relayed and station construction is currently taking place.
After a gap of more than 30 years since the last scheduled service on the line, the Ennis to Athenry renewal will deliver direct, regular, Galway to Limerick services, timed to meet commuter needs.
The trains will serve Limerick, Ennis, Athenry, and Galway, as well as new stations at Sixmilebridge, Gort, Ardrahan, Craughwell, and Oranmore.
The rail service also promises to provide passengers with connections to a range of inter-regional services, through linking with Limerick-Dublin and Galway-Dublin services.
