Dolan welcomes funding for social enterprises

Senator Aisling Dolan has welcomed the announcement of €50,000 of funding for Social Enterprises across Galway for the cost of capital projects, refurbishments, repairs, or the purchase of new equipment.

Investment of one million euro was announced this week by Minister Heather Humphreys as part of the National Social Enterprise Policy for Ireland 2019-2026. The Department of Rural and Community Development are now inviting social enterprises to apply to the fund.

The Ballinasloe-based Senator said that social enterprises are groups that really make an impact in local areas with a focus on social, economic or environmental development.

“They provide valuable supports by growing, strengthening and investing in communities throughout Galway”

“This funding of €50,339 arrives at a great time as the country re-opens and it will benefit communities throughout Galway city & county in many ways.

“The Social Enterprise Capital Grants Scheme 2021 is being administered by the Galway City & County Local Community Development Committees (LCDCs ). Galway LCDC is responsible for co-ordinating, planning and overseeing local and community development funding and bringing a more joined-up approach to the running of local and community development programmes with great success.

The closing date for applications is early October, groups should check with their Local Community Development Committee LCDC for further details,” she said.

GMIT postgrad students host art exhibition

An exciting exhibition of work by graduates of the GMIT Masters in Creative Practice will open in GMIT Cluain Mhuire in the School of Design and Creative Arts this Saturday, September 11, running until Friday 17 September.

The exhibition titled “Plan C: Whereabouts? , curated by graduate artists Ruby Wallis and Michaële Cutaya, presents the work of 21 students across multiple media such as painting, sculpture, textile, installation and film.

The event has been organised by graduates of 2020 and 2021, who are delighted to finally get the opportunity to share their work with their families, friends and the public. “We have had to change plans so many times over the past 18 months. We are way past Plan B. So, Plan C - C for Covid, C for Contemporary, Creativity and Culture, but also C for Climate and the Changes facing us all”.

“We’ve had to find a place to stand and at times to take a stand. In the digital realm it was not always easy to know our whereabouts and that of our peers. Yet we needed shelter. Many works in the exhibition respond to the material everyday objects and domestic surroundings that have helped us along and re-invest their potentialities. Other works reach out beyond our screens to connect with the diversity of our conditions.”

Celine Curtin, Head of Department Creative Arts & Media, said they are all thrilled to be able to open up their doors again to the public and welcome them in to see the wonderful creative works of these dynamic students.

The show will be open from Saturday 11 to Friday 17 September. Saturday and Monday to Thursday 10-6; Sunday 10-5; Friday 10-9. The closing event is on Culture Night, 17 September, with a performance at 7.45 pm. Booking through Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/169313538351
