The East of the Corrib Cycle-Bus is delighted to announce a community cycle this Sunday, 12th September, as part of Bike Week 2021.
The cycle-bus will cycle their usual route to school, with a 10am departure from outside the Maldron Hotel, Sandy Road. The route uses off-road ways as much as is feasible, and is possibly the most beautiful route to school in the country using woodlands at Terryland Forest Park, the River Corrib and Eglinton Canal. Everyone will enjoy complimentary refreshments at the end of the route from the Barista Bus at Nile Lodge.
Everyone is welcome, especially families curious about cycling to school along this 3.5km route. The route takes approximately 25 minutes at the pace of the youngest cycle-bus member, a six year old. All city councillors have been invited to enjoy Galway by bike.
At 11:30am, there is an opportunity to join in the Galway Urban Greenway Alliance community cycle from Nile Lodge towards the city centre via the Claddagh, passing the Spanish Arch, Eyre Square, the Courthouse and Town Hall Theatre, and back to Nile Lodge via the Cathedral and UHG. This cycle ends at the Prom in Salthill village. Refreshments will be provided by Ground & Co. The beautiful views of Galway Bay and the Burren will provide the perfect backdrop for a rest and chats with other families and participants.
The East of the Corrib Cycle-Bus is a parents’ initiative and started cycling to five city centre schools last May. Every morning, families and adult volunteers accompany children on bicycles from the Headford Road area through Terryland Forest Park and Woodquay Plots passing by St Nicholas’ Parochial School and the Mercy, then use the canal to drop off pupils at St Patrick’s Primary School before entering the School Street zone outside Scoil Iognáid and ending at the ‘last stop’ at Scoil Fhursa.
Children aged from 6 to 11 years old from Riverside, Coolough, and Bóthar an Chóiste cycle this route every day.
All ages and abilities are warmly invited to enjoy a Sunday morning community cycle, with two complimentary refreshment breaks, and to enjoy the wonderful, safe, and quiet routes through woods and by waters, which are inaccessible by car.
