Ireland has ‘moral responsibility’ to take in more Afghan refugees, says PBP Galway

Party also calls on Government to end the US military’s use of Shannon Airport

Ireland has a “moral responsibility” to take in far more than the “mere 195 refugees” from Afghanistan it has pledged to accept.

This is the view of People Before Profit Galway representative, Adrian Curran, who is calling on the State to admit a higher number of Afghan refugees. He said the current figure is “well below the number which can and should be permitted to enter”.

“Ireland has a duty to welcome a proportional share of refugees from war, oppression and persecution, which Western imperialism caused in Afghanistan through the bloodshed created by the US, the British, and NATO,” said Mr Curran. “The evacuation of Kabul shows the cynicism by which imperial powers jettison those who supported it, and we should open our borders and welcome Afghan refugees to Ireland.”

Mr Curran also called on the Government to end the US military’s use of Shannon Airport. “The airport was used to facilitate torture of Afghan prisoners through the US’ extraordinary rendition policy.” he said. “It is clear the Irish political establishment wants the state to be a junior partner in US and EU imperialism, with over 200 Irish soldiers needlessly put in danger as symbolic support for the US-led war in Afghanistan during the duration of the conflict.”
