Junior season commences

The Western Hygiene Supplies premier division made a welcome return on Sunday morning with Salthill Devon enjoying a fine away win against Mervue United.

Victor Collins’ outfit conceded an early goal, but with Timmy Molloy effective in the centre of the park, Salthill eventually prevailed.

Enda Curran edged Mervue in front, but Salthill responded impressively with Darren Creaven providing a nice assist for Molloy to level.

Then Creaven pounced in the second half, reacting smartly after Mikey Fox’s effort had hit the crossbar. Salthill, with Jackson Da Silva solid at centre half, added a third courtesy of substitute Rory Brennan.

Ryan Shaughnessy struck the only goal of the game as defending champions Athenry overcame a spirited Corrib Celtic 1-0.

At South Park William Grant’s return as West United manager culminated in a 3-0 success over newly promoted Colemanstown United.

West custodian Colm Power made an important save early on with Ronan Caldwell, Conor O’Loughlin, and Chris O’Dowd scoring for the home side.

St Bernard’s defeated Tuam Celtic 2-0 with Matt Cosgrove and Christopher Dunne scoring.
