Crowe calls for increased investment to promote women in sport

Senator Ollie Crowe has this week said the Government must further increase funding to promote women in sport. Senator Crowe said the Olympic success enjoyed by the Womens four rowing team, which featured local rowers Aifric Keogh of Aill an Phréacháin in Na Forbacha, and Fiona Murtagh from Gortachalla in Moycullen, Kellie Harrington, the Irish hockey team in qualifying for the first time and many others offers a momentum that must be built on quickly.

Senator Crowe said he met with Minister for Sport Jack Chambers last weekend and discussed this matter.

“Minister Chambers has already shown himself to be a progressive minister, when earlier this year he equalised grants provided to female intercounty GAA players with their male counterparts. Prior to that action the grant received by female players had been worth just one third of the grant given to their male colleagues.

“In addition, the funding provided for women in sport programmes was increased by 33% earlier this year. Despite these advancements, Minister Chambers is aware this is an area where we must continue to progress and is determined to do so. “

Senator Crowe said there was a need to provide greater funding for elite athletes as well as the grassroots of sport. He said

“It’s a revolving circle. The elite athletes provide inspiration and motivate kids to get involved in sport, but they need the resources to give them the best chance of success. The grassroots needed to be funded in terms of resources and facilities in order to keep kids involved and interested.”

Recent research reflecting kids spending increasingly long periods in front of screens should represent a concern for all of us,” Senator Crowe said, and that for many children and teenagers, Covid restrictions had interrupted their sporting activity to a significant degree.

“Of course, it is somewhat inevitable that with modern technology children and teenagers will spend more time in front of screens than has historically been the case, but we must ensure physical activity remains an important part of their lives” Senator Crowe concluded.
