Mayor concerned gardaí 'not taking action' against 'illegal and unacceptable behaviour'

"Gardai are not dealing with the illegal drinking that is now the norm on Salthill beaches"

Mayor Colette Connolly says she is deeply concerned that the gardaí are "failing to take action" across a wide range of "illegal and unacceptable activity" in Galway city.

The mayor made her comments after she received a video of two young men jumping off Wolfe Tone Bridge at 6.14pm on Saturday evening just as a garda was passing by.

"Thankfully the two men survived, but equally a disaster could have ensued and the consequences been much graver," she said. "In the last number of weeks The Claddagh Watch Voluntary Committee, who do their best to safeguard the waterways have taken over seven people from the water. They are often verbally abuse by intoxicated members of the public."

Illegal parking

The Mayor added that she has also received e-mails and phone calls about antisocial behaviour. "I have received e-mails and calls re members of the public going to the toilet in broad- daylight with little regard for others," she added.

.

"The gardai must be more visible and more proactive in relation to such issues," she said. "Illegal parking in Salthill is now the norm with numerous cars parked on double yellow lines and blocking the pedestrian access at the junction of Threadneedle Road and Salthill. Yet nothing is done about it despite many complaints I have made.

"Gardai are also not dealing with the illegal drinking that is now the norm on Salthill beaches, which is truly shocking and appalling."
