Wine of the Week – Senda Old Vine Garnacha

Check out Joyce’s new and exclusive wine range from Spain and Portugal selected by master of wine student Antonia Dominguez from Antonia’s Wines.

Dominguez was born in Jerez, Spain, famed for its sherry production, and was raised in Ireland. She is a holder of the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits and is currently a student on the prestigious master of wine programme, currently the only MW student in Ireland. Her expertise stretches far beyond Spanish wines, extending to all notable wine regions of the world. Under Dominguez' meticulous and quality-orientated selection process, she sources unique, stand-out wines at a range of price points and styles, representing wineries from both undiscovered and classic regions. Her selection is based on offering unique and expressive wines with personality, and on bringing Irish consumers as close as possible to an authentic wine experience.

Garnacha typically produces punchy wines dominated by juicy red fruits (strawberry, cherry ) and white pepper notes. Stunning Sierra de Gredos is a mountainous region, south of Madrid, producing a very different style of Garnacha. This area has recently seen a surge in popularity and recognition among wine-lovers. A new wave of Spanish wine producers has spearheaded the success of fresh, lean, floral Garnacha from this region, fashioned from ancient bush vines.

Practicing organic and biodynamic viticulture, this producer is turning out boutique wines with personality. ‘Senda’ is one such wine – a varietal Garnacha wine, complex and expressive of its unique terroir with aromas of violets, plums and woodland undergrowth, underpinned by a highly mineral background, characteristic of the granite soil.

A tasty, medium-bodied red, this wine offers a wonderful alternative to heavy, robust reds, best avoided on a warm, summer’s day. It can be enjoyed on its own by the glass and pairs perfectly with grilled and barbecue meats, salads and pastas.
