DRUID’S PRODUCTION of The Seagull may have sold-out, but Galway will still be able to see the internationally acclaimed company in action, as the shows will be recorded for streaming in September.
The play, which will be staged in Coole Park, south Galway - the home of Lady Augusta Gregory - will be filmed and presented online exclusively for the Galway International Arts Festival 2021 from Sunday September 5 to Sunday 12.
Due to government guidelines, audience numbers for the live outdoor performances from August 6 to 21, are strictly limited. However, when the play goes onto on demand viewing, it will be accessible to people in Ireland and abroad, ensuring the production has the widest possible reach.

The Seagull was written by Anton Chekhov in 1895, but Druid is staging the version written by Thomas Kilroy, who has moved the setting from Russia to a large country house in the West of Ireland. Directed by Garry Hynes, the cast includes Jack Gleeson, Eileen Walsh, Marie Mullen, Marty Rea, Brian Doherty, Liam Heslin, Bosco Hogan, Bláithín MacGabhann, Agnes O’Casey, and John Olohan.
“It’s a privilege to be working with Thomas Kilroy on his adaptation of Chekhov,” said Druid’s artistic director, Garry Hynes. “While audience numbers may be limited for the live performances, I’m thrilled we’ll get to share our production with audiences all around Ireland and beyond as part of this year’s Galway International Arts Festival.”

Throughout the pandemic, Druid has continued to produce work, employ artists, and provide audiences with access to Irish theatre, including Once Upon a Bridge by Sonya Kelly and Boland: Journey of a Poet, an encore online screening of The Cherry Orchard, reaching audiences in 130 countries.
