Former Strypes members new band - The Zen Arcade - to play Róisín Dubh in December

Garage rock/punk band features three members of the Cavan r'n'b group that wowed Elton John and Paul Weller

THE ZEN Arcade, the Irish garage rock band featuring three former members of The Strypes, will play the Róisín Dubh this winter.

The band, who describe their music as “fast, fuzzy and melodic” and who cite Sugar, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Teenage Fanclub, The Damned, and The Flying Burrito Brothers as inspirations, play the Dominick Street venue on December 15 at 8pm.

Forming in 2019, the band founded their own label, Dental Records. It’s flagship release was ‘Don’t Say A Word’, which reached No 1 in the iTunes Singles Chart on the day of release and entered the National Singles Chart at No 12 the following week. It also enjoyed Irish and US radio play.

The band’s second release, ‘High Fidelity’ also went to No 1. It is named after their own podcast of the same name where they ask ‘When Should They Have Stopped’, (your favourite bands and the point at which they should have called it a day ); ‘Guilty Hatreds’ (bands you feel bad about disliking ); and ‘Never Mind The Fuzzbox’ (the guess the intros round from Never Mind The Buzzcocks but with a fuzz pedal thrown into to avoid any litigation ).

In keeping with the band’s new punk ethos, they also produce a zine, Cro Mag Non. Publishing the PDFs online, the zine has managed to make it to tabletops in England, Germany, America, and Japan whilst also being physically available from miniature kiosks in Tower Records, Rage Records and the Irish Writers Centre.
