Farrell raises children’s respite services with Taoiseach

Speaking in the Dáil yesterday (Wednesday ) Sinn Féin TD for Galway West/South Mayo Mairéad Farrell asked the Taoiseach to expand children’s respite services in the Galway area.

Teachta Farrell said that Crann Óg, which caters for children with complex medical needs, is currently only open 19 nights in the month.

“This needs to be open full time to respond to short term emergency needs and to expand respite for more children.

“Crann Mór for Autistic children requires an alternative location for short term emergency beds.

“At the moment if a child requires emergency respite often a family’s only option is to bring their disabled child to A&E to get a bed in the children’s ward – this is a crazy situation. Can you commit to extending children’s respite in the Galway area?”

In response to Teachta Farrell’s question, the Taoiseach said he would contact the HSE regarding additional resources for both Crann Óg and Crann Mór.
