An important WNL encounter looms for Galway WFC, who face Cork City at Turners Cross on Saturday (2pm ).
Despite losing four matches in a row, Galway WFC manager Stephen Lally is adamant that his young team can respond.
“We have a lot of good talent,” Lally says. “At the moment all I want to do is to start putting in performances. We need to give girls confidence, that when they get on the ball they can play.
“We want them to play with a smile on their face, to be comfortable on the ball. If we do that the results will look after themselves.
“There is no point going out saying we have to win this game, then we don't and that is seen as a failure. We just want to go out to put in a very good performance again, individually and collectively.”
Last weekend table toppers Peamount United proved too strong for a spirited Galway outfit, eventually prevailing 4-0 victors. However, Lally was satisfied with how Galway battled against the standard bearers. “We competed well in the second half, and, in fairness in the first half we tried to play too,” Lally says.
“We just gave away goals when simple little mistakes cost us goals. We were just a bit slow to react and we got caught out of position which is something we will work on this week. We had a good chat at half-time, we said we would keep trying to do the right things, which we did.
“We realise and acknowledge they could have scored more goals, but there were encouraging signs for us too. We will take the positives out of it, we will bring them into the next game, and we will try to work on the negatives in training.”
Following a successful stint overseeing Mervue United’s academy structure, Lally is delighted to be back operating at senior level in the League of Ireland game. “It is exciting every day when you are planning what you are going to do,” Lally replies.
“In fairness to the group they have a great way of communicating so you can plan what you are going to do. They communicate well, they have a great system in place.
“We are aware early in the week who is available for training with exams and people doing other things. So at least you know where you are and you can plan accordingly.”
Delivering a defiant display Leeside is the mission Galway WFC want to accomplish with the passionate Lally optimistic regarding the remainder of the campaign.
