NUI Galway launches online summer camp for young innovators

Young people will have the chance to use their ingenuity to tackle issues related to climate change in a new online summer camp taking place next month. The camp, The Inventioneers, has been launched by NUI Galway in partnership with the HEA, and will take place from June 8 to 11.

The camp is for second level students in transition year and Senior Cycle who want to create ideas that enhance quality of life, and reimagine how ordinary problems related to climate change can be solved in extraordinary ways.

The one-week free camp will focus on developing the entrepreneurial and innovation mindset of participants through experience, using tools such as design thinking and the lean canvas, together with first-hand experience of third level students from different disciplines. The camp will be a positive environment for young entrepreneurs to develop, test, and pitch their ideas.

The initiative is a cross campus partnership of IdeasLab, the student enterprise hub at NUI Galway, the School of Education, BioInnovate Ireland, and the JE Cairnes School of Business and Economics. Prizes will be presented, and the prize for best idea is a new iPad and an Inventioneers innovation kit for the winner’s school.

The virtual camp will run daily from 10am to 3pm and will be themed on solutions to problems related to climate change. The camp is limited to 100 students, and is free to attend.

“We have worked with multiple schools across the region in recent years and have been so impressed with their enthusiasm and innovation,” said Natalie Walsh, director of entrepreneurial development, NUI Galway IdeasLab. “The Inventioneers online camp gives us the opportunity to now broaden out our programme nationally and work with future innovators on a topic that has impacted upon all of our lives. We are so excited to launch this programme and work with students to tackle climate change problems that they are facing in their homes, schools, and communities.”

Those interested in attending the camp can register by May 28 at theinventioneers.eventbrite.ie
