Plans to transform the area around Galway Harbour will “have a radical impact on the future of the city” and residents must ensure their voices are heard on this issue.
This is the view of Labour Galway City West councillor, Niall McNelis, who said the proposals for the inner harbour development, will “significantly impact” the harbour area, and the city centre more generally, as well as the city’s links with the shoreline.

The plans relate primarily to use of the existing port area. Covering 17 acres, the proposal encompasses space for commercial, cultural, and hospitality uses, along with housing and outdoor areas. Labour is calling for “robust consultation” with the public and stakeholders.
“There is much to consider,” said Cllr McNelis, “including the potential role of this space as an interchange point for greenway and cycle routes, the extent and nature of any housing to be provided, and the height profile of the area, including the impact on sight-lines.”

Cllr McNelis [pictured above] said the potential for “significant cultural infrastructure” and spaces within the proposed new development is also welcome, but also needs consultation. “It will require significant engagement with various elements within our creative and cultural communities,” he said, “to ensure what results is in the best interests of that sector.”
The consultation process is open until 16 June at galway-harbour.com “I urge all those with an interest in the future of the city,” said Cllr McNelis, “ to review the plans and make a submission.”
