Further assault charges for Manuela’s killer

The man currently serving a life sentence for the murder of Swiss student Manuela Riedo was brought before Galway District Court this week charged with the assault of gardai and with breaching a protection order.

Gerald Barry (29 ) from Rosan Glas, Rahoon, was brought before Judge Mary Fahy last Monday charged with assaulting Garda Jason Kelly and Sgt John McElroy at Eyre Square on March 31, 2007. He is also charged with being intoxicated in a public place, using threatening and abusive behaviour, failure to obey Garda orders, and wilfully obstructing gardai on the same date.

Another incident occured on August 16, 2007 which resulted in Barry being charged with contravening a protection order made by his then partner by calling to her house at 2.25am and causing her fear. Barry was also charged with assaulting the same woman and a child on the same date.

The court heard this week that these matters had been adjourned until a murder trial had been completed; in March of this year, Barry was sentenced to life for the murder of Miss Riedo (17 ) on October 8, 2007.

Inspector Sean Colleron applied for the case to be further adjourned as there were more charges pending. Judge Fahy granted the application and adjourned the case to September 9, 2009, for mention and for DPP directions.
