Galway WFC suffer setback in Wexford

It was a disappointing Saturday afternoon

It proved to be a most disappointing Saturday afternoon in the south east for Galway WFC, who suffered a 5-0 WNL defeat against a splendid Wexford Youths outfit.

Despite a reasonable start, Galway leaked a couple of soft goals before the break ensuring Wexford seized the initiative.

An unfortunate knee injury to Keara Cormican was a further blow for the visitors, who were unable to cope after the restart as Wexford continued to dominate.

Having shown such promise in the early weeks in the campaign the two away losses against DLR Waves and Wexford must be classed as a setback.

At Eamonn Deacy Park Galway have accumulated seven points from a possible nine with Rachel Kearns outstanding in attack.

The dynamic Kearns, who notched six goals in four games, wasn’t available for the Wexford encounter due to injury, so Galway were understrength from the outset.

When Cormcian was carried off Galway lost another important and experienced performer, with Wexford sufficiently crafty to punish the depleted visitors.

Galway are not in action this weekend, but the next competitive fixture is a particularly daunting assignment at Tolka Park against Shelbourne on May 15.

Noel King and Galway United’s 1991 FAI Cup winning manager, Joey Malone, are coaching a formidable Shels side, who want to claim silverware.

Galway will be hoping to summon a much improved display, but despite the recent reversals there is still some cause for optimism.

Emerging young footballers from the region continue to gather experience at senior level with Therese Kinnevey, Shauna Brennan, and Kate Slevin acquitting themselves well.

Billy Clery will be striving to ensure his Galway squad is ready for a tough test at the Drumcondra venue next week.
