Sweeney excited about significant potential in the west

Galway WFC clash with Treaty United in the WNL on Saturday

Eamonn Deacy Park will provide the backdrop for an important WNL clash on Saturday afternoon when Galway WFC host Treaty United (4pm ).

Following a disappointing defeat away to DLR Waves, Galway WFC assistant manager Maz Sweeney is hopeful that a promising western outfit can summon an instant response.

“It was a disappointing result last weekend, the performance didn't match what our girls are capable of so we are really looking forward to getting back on the pitch,” Sweeney says. “That is the only way to put it right, to hopefully pick up three points.

“We are improving all of the time. There is a lot of good young players coming in and we have a bit of experience back too. Therese Kinnevey for me has just been outstanding this season so far, Shauna Brennan and Kate Slevin, we know exactly what we are going to get out of them.

“There is great young potential coming through, even some of the younger ones again, the talent is fantastic.”

Donegal native Sweeney has enjoyed an interesting coaching adventure so far and is delighted to be working alongside manager Billy Clery and Dave Bell.

“I've been involved for years, at college level, and I started out with the community games,” she recalls.

“I think once I went overage I was coaching our U12s team up with Fanad United. That is where it all started for me. I did my coaching badges and was lucky to be involved under Dave Connell and Dave Bell when they were the coaches with the Ireland U19s. So I know Dave Bell for years, him coming in this year has been fantastic.

“His level of detail and knowledge of the game is unbelievable so learning from him and working with Billy for the past number of years is fantastic for me. I'm learning all of the time. It is great.”

This is an exciting time for the WNL with all of the fixtures being streamed live on www.loitv.ie and this is a significant boost according to Sweeney.

“Definitely if you ask me what is the biggest thing that has changed over the last two years, the media has helped so much,” Sweeney says.

“People know the games are on, young girls are seeing the pictures of the girls out there. That is where they aspire to playing now in the Women's National League, in the past that just wasn't there.

“To be fair to everybody locally in Galway they have really bought into giving us the media coverage that the girls deserve. They 100 per cent deserve it, so long may it last and continue.”
