Galway WFC manager Billy Clery believes his promising team can develop further during 2021.
Goals from Rachel Kearns, Kate Slevin, and Lynsey McKey ensured Galway defeated Bohemians 3-1 in the WNL at Eamonn Deacy Park last Saturday.
“It was important to get off the mark with a win,” Clery says. “Obviously it is great psychologically for us to see ourselves second on the table. We played well, but we are capable of playing a lot better too.”
An opening weekend draw with Cork City also showcased Galway’s potential with six goals netted in two fixtures.
Progress is being made according to Clery. “I think we have definitely improved on last year, but in saying that there still is an awful lot of room for improvement,” Clery replies.
“I think the players know that, they can compete, they can play at the highest level. They can compete with the top teams in the league.
“It is all about getting confidence in the group, trying to improve everything, to achieve the goals we set out at the start of the season.”
A trip to the UCD Bowl on April 17 for a clash against a highly regarded DLR Waves outfit is next on the agenda with Clery adamant about the increasing depth of Galway’s squad.
“Systems don't win games, players do,” Clery states. “Tessa Mullins came on the last day, Elle O'Flaherty came on, the girls in the squad they are all pushing for positions. If you aren't performing on any given day we have plenty of options to bring people in.
“Again there is that element of pressure on the players to go out, to perform week in, week out. We have a bigger squad than we had last year, we are a lot more competitive across the squad.
“It is important when the players go out they need to perform, to guarantee their position in the starting line up.”
