Galway WFC draw opening WNL fixture

Rachel Kearns netted a hat-trick

GALWAY WFC 3 CORK CITY 3

Ultimately a compelling encounter packed with goals at Eamonn Deacy Park culminated with the WNL spoils being shared.

It was an action packed match with Rachel Kearns' brilliance and Cork City's determination the chief talking points.

Kearns struck a hat-trick for Billy Clery's team and also demanded several fine saves from Cork goalkeeper Abby McCarthy.

Five minutes from time, though, Cork pounced for an equaliser courtesy of influential captain Becky Cassin.

Galway, who squandered several gilt edged opportunities, were left reflecting on what might have been.

Initially two sharp Kearns goals after 15 and 22 put Galway in command, but Cork thunderded back into the contest.

Substitute Lauren Egboloniu narrowed the gap on the half hour mark before Eabha O'Mahony levelled on 37.

Within a minute Galway summoned an instant response courtesy of a remarkable Kearns effort to lead at the break.

After the restart McCarthy made some excellent saves, while Kate Slevin also missed a penalty for Galway.

Then in the closing stages Cassin's long range effort rattled the Galway net ensuring Cork left the west armed with a point.
