Half a million euro has been allocated to upgrade the Western Way in Connemara, including improvements to the walking trail and Derroura bike trail, and develop a ‘Eurovelo’ cycle route from Lennane to Kinvara.
The funding is from the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme and will enable the upgrade of 10km of walking trail and the replacement of two bridges along the Western Way; the upgrade of the 16km bike trail at the Derroura Mountain Bike Trail Network, near Oughterard; and the ‘Eurovelo’ cycle route development.
The funding has been welcomed by Fine Gael Senator, Seán Kyne. He noted that this investment will be complemented by the ongoing efforts to develop the Connemara Greenway, which recently received €11 million in funding for the installation of a new bridge over the Corrib using the foundations of the old Clifden Railway line.
