Galway WFC manager Billy Clery is delighted with some interesting additions ahead of the WNL season.
Yesterday at Eamonn Deacy Park champions Peamount United eventually defeated Galway 2-1 following a lively friendly.
Clery's charges face Treaty United at Maree on Saturday afternoon ahead of the March 27 league opener against Cork City.
Slovenian international goalkeeper Maja Zajc and former Everton youngster Kaya Pottinger have signed for Galway WFC recently.
"We know we have a good foundation, that we have a good group of players to build on going forward," Clery says.
"We are always trying to recruit. We are a small club in the west of Ireland and while we have a big catchment area this is an elite league. This is about winning, it isn't about development, we want to be competing at the top end.
"Of course we will bring through and develop the very best and the cream of the crop, they will push on, no doubt. You can see that reflected on the park, but we are also looking to push on, to win, and to challenge.
"So that is why we are willing to recruit from outside to supplement the quality players we have. It is never ending, we are always looking to improve things across the board."
With Rachel Kearns offering a dynamic option in attack and Ruth Fahy also set to return the depth of the Galway squad is increasing according to Clery. "I think when we have everyone available we have depth, for the Peamount game here we were missing maybe five players which is a lot of experience within the group.
"There is strength in depth when we have everyone available, but as was seen in the second half we are trying to incorporate some of the U17s into the senior group.
"Kate Slevin, Therese Kinnevey, and Shauna Brennan have really stepped on. Obviously we are delighted to have Savannah McCarthy back with us, we have Keara Cormican and Ruth Fahy to come back too which will add a lot to the group."
A victory over Shelbourne last weekend was followed by another revealing encounter with Peamount with Slevin netting for Galway.
"It was a good workout, we were probably disappointed about the way we played, especially in the first half," Clery states.
"The second half was a lot better, we took the game to them, we played the game on the front foot in their half and we created a few chances."
