The planned development of an Olympic standard 100m track in Tuam has been welcomed by Galway athletes.
The facility, that will also feature long jump, high jump, javelin and shot put areas, will serve the town, surrounding areas, and the schools.
Scoil Bhríde and Tuam Athletics Club have made a joint application for funding for the track to the Sports Capital Grant Scheme.
It is planned to develop the track on the grounds of Scoil Bhríde Mercy Secondary School, next to the new all-weather sports pitch which has been recently completed.
Pierce O’Callaghan, of Tuam AC and chairman of We Are Tuam Community Sports Facility Group, says the partnership with the Mercy is a welcome development "after a number of years of frustration to procure suitable land to build this much needed facility in Tuam".
“The Athletics Club is thriving with new members who desperately need somewhere to train and this track will now ensure the 1200 school children from the town and surrounding areas have a facility to train and compete on.”
Gorgeous Gort 10th anniversary 5k
South Galway AC has organized a virtual 5k as part of club's fundraising activities.
The Gorgeous Gort 2021 Virtual 5km is taking place between Monday 15 and Sunday March 21, so there is still plenty of time to get involved.
A commemorative technical T-shirt will be provided to all entrants.
The club says all support is greatly appreciated or this annual fundraiser which supports its activities and the development of its rapidly growing juvenile section during the coming year.
