Galway United host Bohemians in pre-season friendly

Galway United continue to prepare for the upcoming SSE Airtricity League of Ireland campaign with an Eamonn Deacy Park friendly against Bohemians next on the agenda tomorrow evening (7.45pm ).

On Saturday goals from the promising Francely Lomboto and Ruairi Keating ensured United beat Longford Town at Bishopsgate. In three pre-season encounters so far John Caulfield’s charges have defeated Finn Harps and Longford either side of a draw with Sligo Rovers.

Caulfield is encouraged how United are performing. “We are looking forward to it as it is another good game for us playing a Premier Division team,” Caulfield says.

“Obviously Bohs will be in Europe again, they challenged closely for the title last year so we are delighted to have them coming here. It is another game for our lads to get time on the pitch.

“We have a lot of work done on the training ground, we are improving every week. Hopefully that will keep continuing.”

That so many developing young players are contributing is encouraging. “You look at Francely Lomboto, he scored against Finn Harps and Longford. Others like Wilson Waweru, Colin Kelly, Chris Horgan, Caoilfhinn O'Dea, they are all young lads getting game time.

“It is good for them and it exposes them to see what they can do. We are going to need our panel this year because in a Covid year anything can happen. It is good, they are all getting game time and you need that. The players are improving because of it.”

United’s eagerly anticipated first division clash with Shelbourne is only a fortnight away and Caulfield is excited that competitive action is close.

“We are doing a lot of intensity work so you can definitely see we have gone up another notch,” Caulfield says. “You can see it in the players because they have also gone up a notch. Definitely you can feel that the season is literally around the corner in two weeks.

“We have Bohs and then two weeks later we have Shels at home. It is very close on the horizon. We have a lot of work to do, but we have done a lot of work so we will keep driving on.”
