Druid’s The Cherry Orchard - free to stream next week

Galway company’s acclaimed production stars Derbhle Crotty, Aaron Monaghan, Garrett Lombard, Rory Nolan, Megan Cusack, and others

DRUID’S ACCLAIMED production of The Cherry Orchard, starring Derbhle Crotty, will be accessible to audiences across the globe, when it is free streamed next week.

The Galway company’s 2020 production of Tom Murphy’s version of the classic Anton Chekhov play from 1904, premieres on online at Friday March 19 at 8pm and will be available to stream for 36 hours.

The production forms part of Culture Ireland’s SEODA festival showcasing Irish arts, which takes place online during this year’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations. The steam follows Druid’s recent production of onya Kelly’s Once Upon a Bridge, which was live streamed live in February from The Mick Lally Theatre, to audiences in 35 countries.

The Guardian called the production “urgent”. The Sunday Independent described it as “bleakly magnificent”, while the Irish Independent declared, “Hynes directs with supreme control.”

“I’m delighted our production of The Cherry Orchard will again be seen,” said Garry Hynes, Druid’s artistic director. “Its first run was cut short by Covid-19 but it will live again. We are determined to make our work as accessible as possible, and I want to thank Culture Ireland for helping us to make this happen.”
