Minister Hildegarde Naughton has revealed further details of the €12 million sustainable transport package for Galway funded by her Department last week.
Plans for a coastal greenway linking Salthill with Oranmore will be progressed among a number of greenways that will receive funding, including €125,000 for a pedestrian and cycling bridge on the old Clifden railway line and €1 million in order to provide an urban greenway in the Knocknacarra area linking Rahoon Road and Kingston Road.
A total of €500,000 will be used towards the development of a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists at the Salmon Weir Bridge, where funding has also been provided for associated connections and a new public realm. €80,000 has also been allocated for the progress of a coastal greenway linking Silverstrand with the city centre.
.
“This substantial allocation will support a number of important strategic projects that will alleviate traffic congestion and get more cars off the road by providing attractive, safe alternatives,” Minister Naughton explains.
“But it will also result in considerable improvements to our environment both in the sense of reducing pollution as well as visually and practically enhancing popular amenities throughout the city.”
Funding has been earmarked for enhancement of the “urban realm” at the Spanish Arch, as well as the improvement of the multi-modal traffic layout in the surrounding area.
.
A cross-city link will be developed with €750,000 being allocated. A total of €340,000 will be put towards for improvements of bus, cycling and walking routes on the Dublin Road Transport Corridor between Moneenageisha Junction and the Martin Roundabout.
An upgrade project at the Martin Roundabout will enhance facilities for public transport and vulnerable road users as part of the Ardaun Transport Study, which will cost a total of €1 million.
A range of measures to improve pedestrian and cycle safety within the existing city network will be funded to the tune of €200,000, while €165,000 will be used to provide on-street cycle parking at various locations.
.
The investment of €250,000 will see improvements to the public realm at Raven’s Terrace as part of a junction upgrade at Sea Road and Fr Griffin Road, which will reconfigure traffic movements.
A wide range of active travel measures throughout the city, including pedestrian crossings, new footpaths and upgrades to lighting on walking and cycling routes has been allocated €930,000 under the scheme.
Minister Naughton said: “I am very pleased to have been able to facilitate this transformation through my department."
