New book teaches sustainable development goals through drama

Interdependence Day! is a resource for primary and secondary schools, colleges, and youth theatres

A new book which marries teaching drama to young people with the issues of sustainable development, environmentalism, and climate change, has been launched.

Interdependence Day! Teaching the Sustainable Development Goals through Drama, written by the Galway based writer and educator Pete Mullineaux, is published by Afri (Action from Ireland ) and was funded as a lockdown project by Irish Aid through WorldWise Global Schools.

Pete [pictured below] has drawn on more than 30 years of teaching drama and theatre in writing Interdependence Day! as a resource for use in primary and secondary schools, as well as colleges and youth theatres.

The title takes its cue from the sci-fi movie Independence Day - this time offering an alternative take on how humanity might respond to a demand from visiting aliens to "clean up our act" when it comes to the Earth.

.

In exploring sustainable development goals, pupils and students are asked to explore partnership, solidarity, and self-awareness, rather than turning to the more clichéd solution of aggression and a militaristic response. The book also explores ways towards personal as well as planetary wellbeing.

The book costs €5 and is available via [email protected].
