Council to install pedestrian crossing at Barna Woods

Councillors welcome pedestrian measure on a road which has high traffic volume and speeding

A pedestrian crossing is finally to be developed at the entrance to Barna Woods, creating a safer means for people to move between the wood, Cappagh Park, Lough Rusheen Park, and Silverstrand.

The news that the work is to be carried out on one of the most popular amenities in the west of the city, has been welcomed by Galway City West councillors, Independent Donal Lyons and Fianna Fáil's John Connolly.

The pedestrian crossing will have traffic lights. Funding for the work has been provided by the National Transport Authority. The Galway City Council will carry out the works in the coming weeks.

"Hopefully the installation of the pedestrian crossing can create a more pedestrian friendly environment in the vicinity of the woods," said Cllr Connolly. "While the road at the entrance to the woods is within the 50KM zone, pedestrians frequently contact me regarding the excess speed that occurs along that stretch of road."

"The Barna Road is a major thoroughfare with high traffic volumes," said Cllr Lyons. "The lack of a crossing made it difficult to cross the busy road and I am delighted that the works to be undertaken will make it safer for pedestrians."
