There is no point waiting two weeks to tell the gardai about boy racers doing doughnuts on the main roads, the Chief Supt told the Galway County Council Joint Policing Committee when it met online this week.
It was told that there is an ongoing problem of boy racers congregating in the city and then driving out to chosen spots in the county and disrupting householders and endangering other road users in the early hours of the morning.
Cllr James Charity raised the matter saying that he had been informed that there were boy racers doing doughnuts on the road near the Loughgeorge area, and that its a frequent occurrence on weekend nights.
'People are terrified'
.
He was supported by Cllr Jim Cuddy who said the issue was particularly bad at Rooaunmore, Claregalway and Gurraun North in Oranmore. “There are a lot of elderly people who live in this area and they are terrified by these goings-on. I believe that they meet up in town and then come out to the county areas to carry out their misbehaviour,” he said.
Chief Supt Tom Curley said that it was important that householders who are affected by these antics should contact the gardai straight away.
“If we get the information at the time, and it can be given anonymously, then we can get the Road Policing Unit to deal with it there and then, so there is no point in letting us know a few weeks later, “ he said, asking councillors to relay this information to residents in the affected areas.
Cllr Mogie Maher thanked the gardai for dealing expeditiously with the problem of boy racers in the Loughrea and Portumna areas.
