Ninety scholarships awarded to GMIT students at virtual ceremony

Ninety GMIT students were awarded scholarships in recognition of their academic, personal, sporting, and cultural achievements at a virtual ceremony last week.

The ceremony, which took place on Thursday January 28, was attended by the students, their families, school principals, school guidance counsellors, and GMIT staff.

The students, from a range of programmes across the five GMIT campuses, are from counties in the west, the midlands, Dublin, Wicklow, Waterford, and Cork, and have been studying mainly online since the start of this 2020/21 academic year.

Speaking at the online awards ceremony, president of GMIT, Dr Orla Flynn, said: “One of the highlights of the academic year in GMIT has always been the traditional annual scholarships ceremony, where we welcome our scholarship students, their families, lecturers, and school staff to Galway for a very special evening.

“While we were disappointed that we couldn’t meet everyone in person this year, we wanted to ensure our scholarship recipients were formally recognised for their achievements," she added. "This year’s scholarship recipients have had to quickly adapt to the new styles of learning that the Covid pandemic has brought into our lives, and I have no doubt that they will be among the most resilient and adaptable of our graduates.”

The ceremony saw a number of academic and access scholarships awarded, along with 1916 scholarships, the Sara Gibadlo Memorial Scholarship, the Dace Zarina Memorial Scholarship, mature student access scholarships, Uversity scholarships for adult learners, sports scholarships, Gaelic Players Association (GPA ) scholarships, Women’s Gaelic Players Association (WGPA ) scholarships, the John Costelloe Scholarship, Galway Wind Park scholarships, the Flanagan Fittings Scholarship, sanctuary scholarships, the Teagasc Walsh Fellowship, the Dublin Port Company and GMIT PhD Research Scholarship, the GMIT Department of Creative Education and GMIT Research Office Masters by Research Scholarship, the GMIT Letterfrack and GMIT Research Office Masters by Research Scholarship, GMIT postgraduate scholarships, and Ireland Fund's ‘No Mind Left Behind’ scholarships.
