Galway tourism set to benefit from new fund, says Naughton

Outdoor activity providers, visitor attractions, caravan and camping providers, and cruise hire companies can apply to new fund

Tourism businesses in Galway are set to benefit from a new €55 million investment by Fáilte Ireland, which, according to a local TD, will ensure the sector is "well placed to thrive" when travel is permitted again.

Minister of State and Fine Gael Galway West TD, Hildegarde Naughton said the nationwide investment through the Tourism Business Continuity Scheme would support businesses not eligible for funding under Covid-19 grant schemes.

The first phase of the scheme opens for applications on February 11 to outdoor activity providers, visitor attractions not eligible for Covid Restrictions Support Scheme, caravan and camping providers registered with Fáilte Ireland, and cruise hire companies which meet the eligibility criteria.

“Tourism has always been an important part of our economy from which many other sectors benefit indirectly,” she said. “It is important that local tourism businesses are supported to ensure their survival through the pandemic, and to ensure they are well-placed to avail of the opportunities that will arise when we emerge from this crisis.”

Further plans to enhance tourism in Ireland

The National Tourism Development Authority also announced new domestic marketing plans, investment commitments in outdoor dining and urban animation, and its strategic priorities for the year ahead. Fáilte Ireland has also committed to the enhancement of urban areas through the 31 Destination Town projects across the State.

The Outdoor Dining Grant Scheme will improve the quality of outdoor dining spaces and offer reassurance around safety and comfort. The Urban Animation Grant Scheme seeks to "animate cities and towns" with innovative lighting and art installations.

Fáilte Ireland has also committed to working with industry to build improved websites and online booking capability through a new digital transformation programme and virtual sales events.
