A computer science degree can unlock amazing career opportunities

Since the dawn of the smartphone, we have seen a explosion of software-based innovations hosted in the cloud and delivered via mobile, that are now engrained as part of our daily lives. It’s been stated that “software is eating the world”, from Zoom to Snapchat to Netflix, software really is all around us. Our lives have become more intertwined with computer and mobile applications and it didn’t happen by magic. The most popular applications that we use on a day-by-day basis came from the minds of brilliant computer sciences graduates.

A degree in computer science should be top of the list of courses students, both male and female, should be looking at. As technologies continue to evolve, there is a constant demand in the industry for bright young minds that can create, enhance, and deliver creative and inventive applications. Most leading universities work with technology companies, such as Genesys, to offer practical, first-hand experience to help students get to grips with the varied world of software engineering, cloud computing and user experience design.

Many prospective students could be put off by the thought that you need to have excelled in maths and have existing coding experience. This is not the case. If you have a solid Leaving Cert and have done any of the sciences, you are well set up to pursue this course. Coding is taught from the basics, and you will continue to be taught all the necessary software skills as you progress.

With a degree in computer science, students can expect that their career paths can range from software development, all the way to product management and business leadership. While many technology companies are looking to recruit fresh graduates, the degree also opens doors for entrepreneurship and many graduates go and set up their own start-ups.

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of a computer science degree is that it will open endless opportunities for students. Our ways of working have been changed by Covid-19. There are now way more opportunities to work remotely for large organisations without the need to relocate.

As a degree in computer science is recognised internationally, prospective students and graduates can look for a career that will take them to exotic locations and help them build something truly special. In addition to this, computer science will also provide students with many transferable skills that can be applied to other areas of the technology and business.

The past 15 years have seen the software industry transform at a rapid rate, from the novelty of having email on your phone to now being able to stream your favourite films and TV shows in just a few taps. As we continue to get immersed in technology in every aspect of our lives, computer scientists and software developers continue to be sought after, and very well rewarded, in pretty much every industry. Enrolling in a computer science course will lead you to a fulfilling and rewarding career.
