Celebrate five years of music with the Róisín Dubh this May

IT’S BEEN five years since the Róisín Dubh was taken over by Kevin Healy, Gugai, and Co, and in that time it has become the leading music venue in the city, and to celebrate that fifth birthday milestone, the venue is hosting a major party.

Once Upon A Time In The West runs from Thursday May 28 to Sunday 31 and will feature a host of Irish and international music acts in the Róisín and the Black Box.

The fun starts in the Black Box with a concert from rising Irish singer-songwriter Mick Flannery on Thursday 28 at 8pm. At 9pm in the Róisín, fans of comedy and music will be able to enjoy the wonderful Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players. The Trachtenbergs create songs and stories about the lives of the anonymous strangers seen in the vintage slide collections they have come across in estate sales, garage sales, and thrift stores.

On Friday 29 you’ll be hard pressed to know where to go. Jape (the solo alter-ego of Redneck Manifesto bassist Richie Egan ), the 2008 Choice Music Prize winner, plays the Róisín while Final Fantasy (aka Owen Pallett ), the solo artist, violinist, composer, and string arranger for Arcade Fire, plays the Black Box at 8pm.

On Sunday 31 Mundy, currently promoting his new album Strawberry Blood, and Irish rock hit makers The Blizzards play a double bill at the Black Box at 8pm.

Once Upon A Time In The West will also feature club nights in De Burgo’s from Stevie G and KC, Norman Jay, Gigantic, and the Commander. There will be a pub trail in The Blue Note, Massimo, Bierhaus, and Róisín Dubh, with live music from Galway acts Cuckoo Savante, Breakdown Rambler, Disconauts, and No Banjo, as well as DJ sets from David Kitt, Razor, Noel Phelan, Cian & Cyril, Tiddlerz & Rory Gaffney, Graham Dolan, and the Galway Hooker Rotary Club.

Tickets are available from the Róisín Dubh and Zhivago. See also www.roisindubh.net
