Jobs boost as Sword Security announces Volvo Ocean Race deal

A company founded in Galway has been appointed to provide security services for the Galway stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Sword Event Guard International, which now boasts offices throughout Ireland and Britain, has secured the contract for the 15-day event which is estimated to attract 200,000 visitors. The company will create up to 80 temporary jobs.

Sword’s managing director Diarmuid Smyth says winning this prestigious contract to supply security services to the event is not only a great business opportunity, but also an honour as the event will have a great economic impact on the region.

The Galway stopover is estimated to generate €43 million for the economy.

“This is an opportunity for Galway to show the world what it can do in terms of global events. We are confident that with our vast experience in major events, Sword will play a big part in ensuring that everyone who attends will have a great time and a memorable experience of this world class sporting competition.

“ The unique blend of onshore glamour with offshore drama and endurance will provide round the clock entertainment and we will be there to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment,” says Mr Smyth.

Sword was established in Galway, and is a major supplier of crowd management and event security in Ireland with offices throughout Ireland and the UK. However the company still prides itself in its Galway roots, and supplies services for the Galway Racing Festival.

The Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009 is the world’s premier long distance yacht race for professional racing crews. The nine month race spans some 37,000 nautical miles, stopping at 11 ports. The yachts are due to arrive in Galway May 23/24 until June 6.
