Residents associations to receive amenity grants from council

Cllr John Connolly welcomes reversal of decision regarding payment and calls it 'an important gesture'

Resident associations who applied for the amenity grant in 2020 will have their application processed and grants paid over coming weeks, the Galway City Council has confirmed.

A decision had been made to defer the payments of these monies, the knock-on effect of the decision being no amenity grant in 2021. This was a result of the uncertainty that existed over council finances, however that has been alleviated through Government support.

'Important gesture' from the council

In correspondence with council officials, Fianna Fáil Galway City West councillor, John Connolly, called for residents associations to have their applications processed and grants paid over coming weeks. “I’m delighted the decision has been reversed," he said, "and it has been confirmed to me there will be a further amenity grant scheme offered to resident associations in 2021.”

The grants are used by resident associations for the maintenance of communal areas and litter management within estates. "This is an important gesture from the council," said Cllr Connolly, "that recognises the work undertaken by residents associations across the city.”
