BILLY BRAGG, one of the most powerful and incisive political songwriters of the last 40 years, will play the Black Box Theatre, Saturday November 6 2021.
As The Guardian rightly noted, Bragg's songs are "the perfect Venn diagram between the political and the personal", a balance he has pursued since his punk/folk influenced debut Life’s a Riot With Spy Vs Spy (1983 ). Among his most notable albums are the love song infused Workers Playtime (1988 ); Don’t Try This At Home (1991 ) featuring the hit single 'Sexuality'; the treatise on national identity and interculturalism, England, Half-English (2001 ); and his stripped-down tenth, Tooth & Nail (2013 ), his most successful since the early 1990s.
During that time, he has also become a father; had a No 1 hit single with a cover of The Beatles' 'She's Leaving Home'; had a street named after him; been the subject of a South Bank Show; curated Left Field at Glastonbury; shared spotted dick with a Cabinet minister in the House of Commons cafeteria; was mentioned in Bob Dylan’s memoir; and met Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.
Bragg has also found success as an author, penning The Progressive Patriot: A Search for Belonging (2006 ), Roots, Radicals & Rockers – How Skiffle Changed The World (2017 ), and The Three Dimensions of Freedom (2019 ).
