From Salthill to Roscam: Deliveroo reveals Galway’s eating habits during lockdown

Galwegians made a lot of sacrifices during the lockdown earlier this year, but missing out on delicious food was not one of them. With dining out no longer an option, people turned to companies like Deliveroo for some much needed comfort food at home.

As a result, Deliveroo has put together a picture of our dining habits and takeaway preferences during the lockdown.

The people of Galway clearly have a weakness for Mexican food, with burrito bowls proving to be the most popular dish in every part of the cultural heart of Ireland. But customers in Salthill asked for extra guacamole more than anywhere else, making them burrito connoisseurs.

Residents of Salthill also have a penchant for pizzas, consuming more than any other neighbourhood in Galway. Not just any pizza mind you, the most popular pizza was the artisan pepperoni pizza from Woozza Wood Fired Pizza.

Roscam kept it Oriental during lockdown by ordering impressive quantities of pan-fried dumplings

We can’t forget about beverages. In Newcastle, Bubble Tea from Bubble Bea proved the perfect antidote to a long day of staring at the same four walls. Terryland customers stuck to Coke; after all, nothing beats a classic caffeine hit to get through your last Zoom meeting of the day.

Galway’s lockdown dining Trends:

During lockdown, group ordering (two or more meals ) overtook single orders for the first time in Deliveroo Ireland’s history. Where single meal orders used to constitute over half of Deliveroo’s total orders in Galway, they constituted just a third of total orders. This tells us that people were getting together and using food as an escape from the monotony of working from home.

Galway in general was hungrier earlier. Where average orders on a weekday usually peak at around 7.30pm, this shifted to 20 minutes earlier in the day.

Surviving a week working from home definitely earns a treat, with Fridays becoming the main event. Deliveroo saw it overtake Saturdays as the most popular day of the weekend to order a takeaway in Galway.

Arabella Jenkins at Deliveroo said: “From March to July daily routines were turned upside down. It’s no surprise that people changed their eating habits during lockdown. With an uncertain winter ahead, our Galway customers can count on Deliveroo being on hand to deliver comfort to doorsteps from Salthill to Roscam.”
