AS THE year marking the 250th anniversary the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven begins to draw to a close, John O'Conor, one of Ireland's greatest pianists, will give a concert pertforming piano sonatas by Beethoven.
The concert, entitled Emily Anderson In The Beethoven Year - in recognition of the Galway-born woman who translated the letters of Beethoven and Mozart, still a vital source for English language biographers - takes place on Thursday October 15.
"This event is to honour this talented Galwegian and her great contribution to music history," said pianist and Music for Galway artistic director, Finghin Collins. "Through her tenacious work and uncommon gift for deciphering, editing, and translating Beethoven's letters, Emily Anderson has gifted us huge insights into Beethoven's thinking. It's a fantastic legacy to leave to today's performers, musicologists, film makers, and music lovers."
A symposium and concert
The event will feature an online symposium and a live streamed concert. The symposium takes place in the Connemara Suite, The Hardiman Hotel, Eyre Square, from 2pm to 4pm, where via Zoom, John O’Conor will present, 'A life Performing Beethoven' (2pm to 2.45pm ), and Prof Mark Everist, University of Southampton, will give a talk entitled, 'Music and the Epistolary Word, Emily Anderson and Musicology' (3pm to 4pm ).

At 8pm, from the Connemara Suite, John O’Conor will be live in concert, performing the piano sonatas No 30 in E Op 109, No 31 in Ab Op 110, and No 32 in Cm Op 111.
Due to Level 3 restrictions this concert will be presented online only as a live-stream event. The stream link (€12 ) will become available from Thursday October 8 at www.musicforgalway.ie The performance will remain available (and purchasable ) for a further 72 hours.
