Fitzgerald set super time on the track

The men’s 5000m was the highlight of an exciting day's competition at the Galway Track and Field challenge on Saturday.

William Fitzgerald of Craughwell AC won the race with a super time of 15.21, ahead of the early leader David Carter of GCH, who clocked 15.31. Sean Cotter, also of Craughwell AC, crossed the tape next in 15.46.

Sinead Foran of GCH won an exciting and closely-fought women's race in 19 minutes flat, ahead of clubmates Deirdre Gibbons and Sinead Kelly, in second and third respectively.

Oisin Davis of Craughwell AC took the honours in the 800m men's race, clocking just outside the two-minute mark, with Gavin Cooney, also Craughwell AC, next and Neill Keane of GCH third.

Emily Miskella of Craughwell AC took a commanding victory in the women's race in 2.22, with Roisin Geaney of South Galway AC second and Saoirse Moore of Craughwell in third.

William McDonnell of GCH stormed home in the mile to break the tape in 4.48, while Tara Donnellan of GCH was the first woman home.

In the field there were wins for Justin Lane in the men's long jump, and Leone Hegarty of Tuam AC in the women's shot put.

Galway Cross Country

The 2020 Galway Cross Country championships will take place Sunday October 4 and Sunday October 11.

The first day will take place at Galway Racecourse on the infield, and will feature the even ages juvenile races from U8 through to U18 level and the U20, Senior and Masters races at adult level. The second day will feature the intermediate adults’ races and the juvenile uneven ages competitions.

The programme will commence at 10.30am on both days and will continue to 5pm to facilitate all races under required protocols. The venue for day two will be confirmed this week.
