Online public meeting on Galway's housing crisis

Meeting will seek to build a 'movement to fight against the sell-off of public land and instead have proper housing for all'

An online public meeting on the State's housing crisis will take place next week, with speakers from the National Homeless and Housing Coalition and An Taisce.

The meeting, entitled Solutions to the Housing Crisis: Public Housing on Public Land, will be hosted by People Before Profit Galway and hosted on the PGP Galway Facebook page on Thursday October 8 at 7.30pm.

The speakers will include Tina MacVeigh, chair of the National Homeless and Housing Coalition and People Before Profit Dublin city councillor, and Derrick Hambleton of the Galway branch of An Taisce.

The issue of publicly owned land is relevant given that plans are being drawn up for the redevelopment of Sandy Road, Dyke Road, around Ceannt Station, and Nuns Island, with much of this land is owned by the Galway City Council.

PBP Galway spokesperson Adrian Curran Plans said: "In recognition of the housing emergency Galway faces, PBP believes public land must be used to build public housing and community facilities. We'll be discussing this on the night as well as how we can build a people power movement to fight against the sell-off of public land and for proper housing for all."
