City council approves loan for housing bodies to purchase properties

The Galway City Council has approved the raising of a loan under the Capital Assistance Scheme for the acquisition of 11 properties by approved housing bodies.

The loan which is just under €2.7 million, will see purchase of the properties by the Galway Simon Community (4 ), COPE Galway (4 ), the Peter McVerry Trust (2 ), and the DePaul Housing Association (1 ).

Acting director of services at the Galway City Council Dermot Mahon told members at the local authority's ordinary meeting at Leisureland on Monday afternoon that the tenants for the properties will come exclusively from the city's housing list.

Fine Gael councillor Frank Fahy queried the cost of refurbishment works on some of the properties which totalled up to €40,000 and if the council was purchasing houses that were in poor conditions.

However, Mr Mahon clarified that refurbishment costs included adaption works for certain houses because of the individual's particular needs.
